La Jolla Country Day basketball stars Candice Wiggins and Marissa Rivera confirmed their college choices Friday. Wiggins will attend Stanford, coach Terri Bamford said, and play hoops and volleyball. Rivera will go to Texas Christian. Another duo, the Mission Bay HS tandem of Amber Sprague and Amanda Rego, had previously committed to USD. It was also reported today that El Camino HS F Gyno Pomare verballed to the men’s team at USD. Pomare has the ability to develop into one of the best players in the West Coast Conference before he’s done … San Diego State made softball coach Kathy Van Wyk the senior women’s administrator. She’ll keep her coaching responsibilities … Chargers owner Alex Spanos donated $1 million to the San Diego Fire Relief Fund … The Chargers downgraded T Soloman Page to questionable for Sunday’s game against the Bears. If he can’t go because of a bad ankle, rookie Courtney Van Buren would get his first start … The White Sox picked up a $4 million option for 2004 for P Esteban Loaiza (Mar Vista HS), who was 21-9, 2.90 this past season and led the AL with 207 Ks … The Cubs did not pick up their option on 1B Eric Karros (Patrick Henry HS) … The Tigers claimed AAA P Cliff Bartosh (2-5, 4.29) on waivers from the Padres, which might explain why they are where they are.

Back at it, and hoping we never have to go through that again … The CIF Thursday announced a revised football schedule for San Diego area teams. The games which were to be played this Friday, but were canceled, will be made up on Saturday, Nov. 22, according to a CIF official. No explanation was given for why the makeup games would be played on a Saturday instead of a Friday. The first round of the playoffs will be on Friday, Nov. 28; the second round on Friday, Dec. 5; the semifinals Friday, Dec. 12; and the finals four all four divisions on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at Qualcomm Stadium. Division IV will have its playoffs on the 28th and 5th and final on the 17th. Eight-man ball will have playoffs on the 22nd and the final on the 29th on a time and location to be determined … USD QB Eric Rasmussen was invited to the Division 1-AA All-Star Game on Dec. 30 in Ft. Lauderdale … USD reiterated that all weekend sports events were still on, including Saturday night’s vs Butler … In baseball, the Devil Rays declined their 2004 option on 1B Travis Lee (SDSU) but will try to re-sign him. Lee, who hit .275-19-70, would have had $2.5 million coming his way.

G Wesley Stokes pumped in 29 points to lead the scoring in San Diego State’s basketball scrimmage Saturday. G Brandon Heath added 19, G Tommy Johnson 18 and F-CAerick Sanders 14 and 8 rebounds. Get used to it, because the Aztecs are likely to look to the perimeter for offense this winter. The Aztecs take Sunday off and return to practice Monday … The Aztecs men’s soccer team tied Air Force 1-1 on the Sports Deck, despite two overtimes … In college football, freshman Reggie Bush (Helix HS) had another big Saturday for USC, this time as a receiver out of the backfield. Bush caught 5 passes for 132 yards, with TD receptions covering 60 and 37 yards. He also ran for 69 yards on 10 carries and returned a kickoff 35 yards in the Trojans 43-23 rout at Washington … Huskies TE Joe Toledo had a catch for 9 yards in the game. The La Costa Canyon alum has missed much of the season with a bad back … Valparaiso clinched the North Division title in the Pioneer Football League Saturday with a 51-45 victory over Drake, leaving USD’s hopes in the dust. The Crusader’s only other league game is vs Butler, a team which couldn’t beat many local high school squads … Think the Orange Bowl people are breathing a sigh of relief over Northern Illinois’ loss Saturday? We’d rather see them sweat a couple more weeks, but it looks like the BCS is off the hook for another year … It’s looking more like the Dolphins will have to turn to Brian Griese at QB vs the Chargers Monday night because of Jay Fiedler’s injury. Griese has yet to take a snap this season … Rams RB Marshall Faulk (SDSU) will only be used by the Rams Sunday in an emergency because of his healing knee and hand.
